Design Icons in Amsterdam is an annual event where more than sixty quality dealers bring their finest vintage design pieces from 1903s till the 1980s. Dealers from all over Europe come to Amsterdam for sale to both professionals and broad public: well-known classics, anonymous designs, with Eames next to Mies van der Rohe and from Italian-chic to raw industrials. This year I even saw vintage jewelry, designed for Fashion shows as Christian Dior. And I spotted some nice visitors as well.
This is Billy Salezius (1951) from Amsterdam, together with her cute little dog. Billy bought her boots at the Noordermarkt in Amsterdam. (Whenever you’ll visit Amsterdam, take a look at this very special market on Monday morning.)
“Buy what you love, love what you buy”
Meet Hilde Nysen, of Funky Interior from Belgium. Hilde: “Great idea that you want to shoot me, but I’m not at my best effect. This moring we left home very early and my hair got wet by the snow, when we had to unload our car. The suit Hilde is wearing is vintage. It is by the American brand Kreinick. In the 60s it was a famous fashion house in New York. The three-quarter sleeves are trimmed with a fur collar. Good combination with the sturdy high boots. The chair is a vintage one, but I forgot to ask of which designer. Perhaps anyone has an idea? The motto of Funky Interior is: “Buy what you love, love what you buy“.
Jewelry, furniture ande more
A lot of classic designs were offered, such as the Eames chairs. But also the lesser known, elegant Scandinavian furniture from the 60s and 70s.
In short, inspiration enough at this fair. For me, this yellow upholstered chair was a hit. If I come across such a seat somewhere, who knows… Did you miss it this time, do not worry, next year you’ll have another chance. I will announce it in due time.
